Former President Blaise Compaore was charged with murder in connection with the 1987 death of the country’s iconic former leader Thomas Sankara.

Former President of Burkina Faso Blaise Compaore was issued an international arrest warrant in connection with the murder of ex-President Thomas Sankara, judicial sources said on Tuesday.

Sankara, a revolutionary figure who is still a hero to many in west Africa, was killed on Oct. 15, 1987 during the coup that brought his friend and former comrade-in-arms Compaore to power.

A body believed to be Sankara’s was exhumed earlier this year and an autopsy showed it was riddled with bullets, strengthening assertions that he was executed in the 1987 coup.

Sankara took power in a coup in 1983 and adopted a philosophy of Marxism and pan-Africanism that led him to be called “Africa’s Che Guevara”.

“I confirm that an international arrest warrant was issued against President Blaise Compaore by the investigating judge,” Prosper Farama, a lawyer for Sankara’s family, told Reuters.

The arrest warrant against the former president, who has been living in exile in Cote d’Ivoire since the fall of his regime in October 2014, was issued in early December
