JOHANNESBURG/HARARE – Zimbabwe’s first lady Grace Mugabereturned to her homeland on Tuesday from South Africa after failing to turn herself over to the South African police to face charges of assault.
“Yes, she is back in the country. We don’t know where this issue of assault charges is coming from,” said a senior Zimbabwean government official, who declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
Mugabe was due to appear in the Randburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon.
Gabriella Engels, aged 20, has opened a criminal case against the First Lady, claiming she assaulted her in a Sandton hotel room on Sunday night.
Pictures of Engels with injuries to her face have been circulating on social media and she says Mugabe hit her with an extension cord.
Zimbabwe’s First Lady apparently hit Engels after finding her in the hotel room with her sons.
