CHAPUNGU forward Bastos Chihowa rose from the bench to score direct from a corner kick, giving the Air Force of Zimbabwe side their first home win of the season in a Castle Lager Premiership match at Ascot yesterday. The second half moment of brilliance from the former Nichrut man was enough to humble the league debutantes.

The win means Chapungu coach Tendai Chikuni can now heave a huge sigh of relief after coming under pressure in recent weeks.

“We are coming from a draw against (Black) Rhinos and I am happy that we have improved on that result and we managed to get a win.

“In the second half we made some tactical changes and it really paid off, Bastos came from the bench and converted a goal and that is what we have been looking for and I am happy.

“We put them under a lot of pressure and they conceded a number of corner kicks which eventually paid off,” said Chikuni.

The visitors got a number of chances in the opening stanza but wasted them with club director and forward Innocent Benza failing to link up well with teammates upfront

After the breather, Herentals continued with their attacking play, Juan Mutudza’s effort crashed against the woodwork and Blessing Majarira blasted the rebound over.

Herentals coach Kumbirai Mutiwekuziwa rued the chances they missed.

“We missed a number of chances during the course of the match and we got punished.

“We had a chance to score the goal but the chances faded after we conceded direct from a corner kick towards the end of the match.

“Conceding direct from a corner shows that our concentration levels had really gone down and at the same time Chapungu was proving to be stronger in terms of their endurance.

“It is unfortunate we lost the match,” Mutiwekuziwa.
