Hospitality industry benefits from 21st February Movement

THE hospitality industry in Bulawayo has praised the hosting of the 21st February Movement by Matabeleland South saying such a big and national event will boost the fortunes of the sector.

This year’s 21st February Movement Celebrations will be held at Rhodes Estate Preparatory School (Reps) in Matobo District about 30 kilometres from Bulawayo on Saturday.

More than 100 000 delegates are expected to attend the event and most of them will put up in Bulawayo.

Speaking to Sunday Business, Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe Bulawayo chairperson Mrs Faith Makamure said the event had already attracted a number of bookings to Bulawayo’s hotels and lodges.

“From what we know so far the big three hotels are almost full in terms of bookings from people who are attending the 21st February Movement Celebrations. We are not sure of other smaller hotels as we have not yet gotten hold of them,” said Mrs Makamure.

The big three hotels in Bulawayo are Holiday Inn, Rainbow and Cresta Churchill.

Mrs Makamure said people were still making enquires on accommodation in relation to the event.

“We are still receiving enquiries from possible occupants of the accommodation and we are very happy with what we can gain from the event,” said Mrs Makamure.

She also said the coming of the 21st February Movement Celebrations was not something that was in the calendar of the hospitality sector but has come as a boost that will leave them at a better position.

“This is a big event and we are grateful that it has come to this part of the country and will leave us at a better position.

We need more of such events as Bulawayo to boost the hospitality sector which employs a lot of people,” said Mrs Makamure.

This year’s 21st celebrations are running on the theme “Promoting domestic tourism”.

Zanu-PF National Secretary for Youth Affairs Mr Kudzanai Chipanga was last week quoted saying this year’s venue was in line with the Youth League’s theme of promoting domestic tourism which they adopted two years ago.
