Plight of refugees requires multi sectoral approach

A multi sectoral approach is needed for the plight of close to 9 000 refugees housed at Tongogara refugee camp who are in need of health, water and sanitation, education and permanent accommodation.

Tongogara refugee camp is now home to close to 9 000, mainly from the Great Lakes region, horn of Africa and lately from Mozambique.

Speaking during her visit to the camp, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Prisca Mupfumira said there is need for a holistic and an inter ministerial approach to find lasting solutions to the myriad of challenges faced by refugees at Tongogara camp.

Tongogara camp administrator Mr Misheck Zengeya said the incessant rains worsened the accommodation problems with many homes destroyed in the process, adding that there is need for more teachers at Tongogara Primary and Secondary Schools in order to cater for the growing number of children.

Giving a response approach to the influx of Mozambican refugees, Mr Johanne Mhlanga said 864 Mozambican refugees have been registered at Tongogara while more than 5 000 more integrated into the Zimbabwean communities.

Cde Mupfumira toured Tongogara refugee camp in the company of development partners to have a better appreciation of the situation obtaining on the ground.
