Two people were lucky to escape alive this morning after a haulage truck experienced brake failure just after the Christmas Pass in Mutare and finally overturned next to Megawatt building in the city.
Eyewitnesses said the driver of the haulage truck who was travelling from Harare tried to avoid traffic as the vehicle which was laden with sacks of maize sped into the city’s central business district.
They also raised concern as to the time taken to rescue those who were trapped in the haulage truck.
“The driver tried in vain to avoid traffic as he hurtled down the road. He is a good driver but a commuter omnibus driver that obstructed him resulted in the accident. It is unfortunate that the emergency response teams arrived late. They were ill prepared and the driver was stuck in the wreckage for over an hour,” they (eyewitnesses) said.
ZRP Manicaland spokesperson, Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa said preliminary investigations point to brake failure as the reason for the accident.
“The truck had brake failure along Christmas Pass. However, the driver managed to maintain the truck on the road but as he approached the central business district the vehicle overturned and landed on its roof. The driver sustained head injuries with the passenger escaping unhurt,” he said.
There have been several accidents along the Christmas Pass attributed to brake failure as motorists fail to negotiate the curves, ascent as well as the descent.
