20 Ethiopian illegals nabbed in Gutu

SOME 20 Ethiopians who had no traveling documents and on en-route to South Africa had their journey cut short after a vehicle they were traveling broke down, leading to their
arrest in Gutu communal lands last week.

The 20, all between the ages of 12 and 18 years and could not speak or understand English, appeared before Gutu resident Magistrate Edwin Marecha earlier this week charged with contravening the country’s immigration laws.

They were remanded in custody to 7 April.

The court heard that on March 17, this year, the 20 were passing Matsai village in Gutu on their way to South Africa when their commuter omnibus they were traveling in broke down.

Court was told that police officers, who were on patrol, saw the broken-down Toyota Hiace which was parked near the road they became suspicious and went to investigate.

Upon arrival at the scene, police details discovered 20 passengers on board who turned out to be immigrants. They all failed to produce their passports leading to their arrest.
