RAINBOW Amateur Netball League sponsor Aaron Chinhara has called on associations to practise good governance for sport to take a huge leap forward.
This comes after Glow Petroleum made a huge commitment to continue sponsoring the league which will resume next month.
“We are very happy with the progress we have made so far as RANL and the teams are happy with the way the league has been run,’’ the Harare businessman said.
“It is my plea that executives running sports associations practise good governance and they value accountability.
“In the journey we have travelled so far, I am happy that I am seeing progress and everything is being done above board.
“We have decided to pledge our support for the league this year. We would like to promote the girl child and at the same time see the sport grow and we will continue to rally behind the league.
“We are also grateful for the support we are getting from ZINA (Zimbabwe Netball Association), as our mother body, and we hope after this year we will have more participants in RANL.’’
RANL secretary-general Moses Gukurume also took time to announce that the start of the league will be delayed to help them deal with some issues that cropped up very late.
“We are glad that our sponsor has pledged his full support for the league again this year and we hope we will have a smooth journey like before.
“Our intention is to protect the name and brand of the sponsor and we know that whenever there is something good, there are always those who become jealous. We urge you journalists to report objectively and gather their evidence well. Our aim is to have athletes who have upright morals so that the league flows smoothly.
“We had suggested that the league starts on March 9, but we now we expect to have our annual meeting soon so that we kick start the league. We are expecting at least 20 teams in the league this year and we hope it will be another interesting and competitive season,” said Gukurume.
Netball has grown in leaps and bounds in recent years, thanks to the money being injected by sponsors like Glow Petroleum, and the national team will compete at the World Cup this year.
