A call has been made for rural women to embrace government initiatives that promote empowerment  to transform lives and reduce the gap between themselves and their counterparts in urban communities.

The call was made by the Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development Cde Nyasha Chikwinya during the International Women’s Day commemorations held at Madzorera Business Centre in Zvimba West.

The celebrations began with delegates led by Cde Chikwinya touring improved model rural households belonging to Mrs Pauline Madzorera and Mrs Petronella Tore who benefitted from the internal savings and lending scheme which promotes a culture of saving.

Cde Chikwinya expressed joy on the strides made by rural women to improve their lives and took the opportunity to challenge them to be business minded and take up various projects being availed by  government.

Senator Caroline Mugabe who also graced the occasion echoed Minister Chikwinya’s call for rural women to come out of the shell and be counted in terms of being self sufficient and enterprising.

The women who form part of the internal lending and savings scheme went through some capacity building programmes spearheaded by Zvimba West legislator Cde Ziyambi Ziyambi who called on those yet to get training to embrace such workshops.

The International Women’s Day is celebrated across the globe on the 8th of March.
