The First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe will curb factionalism within zanu-pf and become the unifying factor amid growing divisions in the revolutionary party, zanu-pf Secretary for Women Affairs Cde Oppah Muchinguri has said. Addressing members of the Women’s League in Midlands Province yesterday, Cde Muchinguri said Dr Mugabe was elevated by the league to weed out lumpen elements within the party who were organising themselves into small groups, pursuing selfish interests.
She said Dr Mugabe was chosen to lead the Women’s League to curb rampant and recurrent cases of manipulation of women by some individuals within the party who regarded themselves as powerful.
Cde Muchinguri said Dr Mugabe would put factionalism to an end and bring down divisive elements that were stifling development and sabotaging the party in pursuit of selfish interests and personal glory.
“We decided to call Dr Mugabe to lead the Women’s League because we saw that zvinhu zvanga zvonetsa muparty. There were so many people clamouring for the position of party President. As the Women’s League, we are the eye and the watchdog of the party,” said Cde Muchinguri.
“We saw this happening when Simba Makoni challenged the authority of the President (Mugabe). Zvino Makoni akasiya honye (there are still traitors within the party).”
Politicians were now using money to vote for certain preferred candidates to occupy influential positions within the party, said Cde Muchinguri.
She said there were weevils which remained when Dr Makoni defied the party by challenging the President, trying to leap to the summit through unscrupulous and unorthodox means.
“I want to remind you that I am still the Secretary for Women Affairs in Zanu-PF,” she said. “I say so because we have heard that there are other politicians up there who are buying people cars and giving them money.
“These women who are receiving money from certain individuals are now bypassing and defying party leadership in pursuit of selfish interests.”
Cde Muchinguri said the party leadership must name and shame politicians leading factions and pursuing selfish interests at the expense of the party and the electorate.
