Gweru to pay bonus next year

GWERU City Council says it will only pay 2018 bonuses next year due to financial constraints that have seen it fail to pay salaries on time.

Chamber secretary, Vakai Douglas Chikwekwe said the cash-strapped council could not afford to pay bonuses this month, but would stagger payments starting next year.

“Take note that the annual bonus for 2018 will be paid in due course,”Chikwekwe said in a memo last week.

“It (bonus) will be staggered with effect from next year, 2019. Please note that we are currently struggling to ensure that we meet the 30-day cycle for salaries. We are, therefore, unable to pay bonuses this month.”

Chikwekwe, however, said the local authority would pay the November salaries.

This year, council doled out residential stands to workers in lieu of outstanding salaries and bonus payments for 2015.

The stands are in the newly-established Mkoba 21 suburb.

Early this year, employees signed a deal which compels the local authority to pay their medical and funeral expenses as well as school fees in lieu of outstanding salaries.
