Hwange police hunt for barber’s killer

HWANGE police have appealed to the public for help following the discovery of the body of a local barber after he was severely beaten and dumped along the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo railway line.

The post-mortem revealed that Shafton Zulu (38) sustained a sharp deep cut below his right eye, two deep cuts on the forehead, fractured occipital, a deep cut on the right ear, bruises on the left arm and rib cage and his shirt was torn at the back, which police said was an indication, that “he was severely tortured before his death”.

Matabeleland North police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said Zulu, a well-known Cinderella suburb barber, was killed on October 7, but there have been no leads so far.

“We received an anonymous phone call alerting us that a body was dumped along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls railway line on October 10. Our Criminal Investigation Department has been working hard to apprehend the offender, but there hasn’t been any leads,” Makonese said.

“We have called almost all Cinderella residents, Truck Stop and Cinderella bar where he was last seen previously drinking, but nothing tangible has been gathered, hence an appeal to the public with information.”

Makonese said on October 7, Zulu went to a bar with his brother Mavuto and later that evening, had a misunderstanding with one patron over a yet unknown issue.

“The two are said to have withdrawn themselves from other patrons to solve the matter outside. A few minutes later, the two returned and that is when his brother Mavuto left the bar at 8:30pm and went home,” Makonese said.

Zulu later left the bar alone and was not heard from since.

“An unknown man in the area who was wearing a blue work suit, dark in complexion, medium built and had short dreadlocks is the person we are looking for in our investigations,” the police spokesperson said.

Zulu has since been buried.
