Zimbabwean Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko (l) is not only ill-educated and misguided, but has huge skeletons in his cupboard and is loudly singing for his supper by shamelessly seeking to sanitise the Gukurahundi genocide perpetrated by the Mugabe government in the 1980s.
The newly appointed VP is quoted (republished here in case one day he denies it) in the newspapers saying that Gukurahundi was a conspiracy by the West, which has riled MDC spokesman, Obert Gutu (r) into issuing a statement in which he said Mphoko’s comments were an insult to both the victims and survivors of the Gukurahundi genocide.
This ill-informed, ill-educated and misguided man was continuing to seek to distort the facts of history by referring to the Gukurahundi genocide of the early-to-mid-1980s as a conspiracy by the West, he said.
“The cold and hard fact is that the Gukurahundi genocide was a crime against humanity. It was perpetrated by the Zanu (PF) regime on innocent, unarmed and defenceless people, mainly of Ndebele origin in the Midlands and Matebeleland provinces.
“The 5th brigade of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA ) was specifically deployed in these provinces where they unleashed senseless and brutal violence on unarmed villagers. Pregnant women were bayoneted and thrown into open graves.
“People suspected of harbouring so-called dissidents were killed in cold blood; many victims were simply thrown into open graves and buried alive,” he said, repeating findings by the Legal Resources Foundation and the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in a report called Breaking the Silence.
Another report was ordered by the government and was carried out by Zimbabwean Judge Simplisius Chihambakwe with four Commissioners to investigate the killing of 1,500 political dissidents and other civilians in the Matabeleland region in 1983 and to gather testimony from villagers about what occurred.
But no official report was issued because the government argued that the publication of the report could spark violence over past wrongs!
Said Gutu, himself a senior legal practitioner in Zimbabwe, the level of violence and brutality that was exhibited by the perpetrators of the Gukurahundi genocide will make ISIL, Boko Haram and Al Shabab green with envy.
“This is about human rights. This is about a grim genocide in which more than 20 000 innocent people were brutally massacred by a brutal and insensitive regime.
“Can this Mphoko guy tell us why the Chihambakwe Commission of Inquiry Report into the Gukurahundi genocide hasn’t been made public to this very date? Why is the Zanu (PF) regime desperate to keep this Report under wraps?
“I can understand that this Mphoko guy has several huge skeletons in his cupboard and that, of course, he is loudly singing for his supper. But then this guy shouldn’t insult the intelligence of the people of Zimbabwe by shamelessly seeking to propagate blue lies about the Gukurahundi genocide.”
Mphoko is accused of having defected from Dr Joshua Nkomo’s Zapu to join Zanu (PF) towards the end of the the liberation war. He then joined the CIO and might have been deployed in Matebeleland, in which case he would also be having skeletons in his cupboard.
That would mean that both vice-presidents have Gukurahundi skeletons in their cupboards because the other vice-President, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s role in Gukurandundi is not desputed. He was the Security Minister, therefore with direct command responsibility for what went on.
Gutu said the Gukurahundi genocide was a crime against humanity and that no amount of spin by the likes of one Mphoko could wash away this very sad chapter of Zimbabwe’s post – independence history.
And he concluded by, as a concerned Zimbabwean patriot, by calling for the immediate resignation of Phelekezela Mphoko as one of the two Vice – Presidents of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
