THERE was jubilation in Mbire district, Mashonaland Central, after the ruling Zanu PF party won all the 18 contested seats in the province in the just-ended elections.

Zanu PF legislator Douglas Karoro, who was nicknamed “Soldier Redevelopment” in the remote constituency, defeated David Butau of Zimbabwe Democratic Union (ZDU), Allan Maccomick (MDC Alliance) and Tonderai Sigauke (PRC) by a wide margin.

A visit by NewsDay to Mbire proved that there was peace and jubilation in the constituency, where First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa established many projects, including the Mariga Clinic in Kanyemba, boreholes and a fishery in the run-up to the polls.

Regis Chinhema from Chitsungo said he was happy that the Mbire community chose Zanu PF and there was peace and development in the constituency.

“We spoke with one voice, I am sure you can tell by the results. We love the ruling party because it brought us development of late. We had one private hospital, but now the ruling party offered us another one and many projects are running, that is why we won ‘upon, upon’ and peace is prevailing,” Chinhema said.

Karoro attributed his victory to hard work and visibility in his constituency.

“The secret behind this victory is you just have to be a hard worker, a pragmatist. Above all, you need to have genuine love for the people you represent,” an ecstatic Karoro said.

“Having been concerned with sustainable development issues in my constituency, the people nicknamed me ‘Soja Redevelopment’,” he said.
