A Kwekwe-based private clinic, believed to be an abortion centre, is under police probe following an outcry by disgruntled members of the public.

Investigations by The Herald revealed that the private clinic, which is run by prominent Kwekwe businessman Mr Peter Gore and his wife Theresa, has since rebranded in a desperate bid to regain public confidence.

The clinic is now called Neighbourhood Surgery from previous name Blue Star. Mrs Gore, the director of the clinic, is a registered nurse.

She is set to testify before the police in a case of abortion in which Ambition Gonza (23) was reported to the police by her parents after she allegedly used the clinic to terminate her pregnancy.

Gonza is being investigated under police CR 75/04/19, in which she is accused of allegedly using Mrs Gore’s surgery to terminate her four months pregnancy.

Documents seen by The Herald show that Gonza visited Neighbourhood Surgery on April 10 this year, and was allegedly attended to by Ms Gladies Mujajati, a nurse aid at the private clinic.

“I took her to Room 2 where termination is done and I called Sister Gore to come and do the procedure,” read one of the statements given by Ms Mujajati to the police officer investigating the matter.

“I then gave Gonza three misopostol tablets for her to ingest so that her pregnancy could terminate completely. I then ingested her with oxcytocin.” Sources said Gonza’s parents visited Mbizo Police Station after they became suspicious that she had terminated the pregnancy.

“She would receive phone calls from Mrs Gore who was making follow-ups on her, to hear if her pregnancy had successfully been terminated,” said a source.

“They then reported the matter to the police, but it was then discovered that the clinic was known for terminating pregnancy and it is now under investigation.”

The source said police were now investigating the directors of the surgery, and Gonza was set to appear in court facing abortion charges.

“Mrs Gore is also expected to be a State witness in the case of Gonza,” said the source. Contacted for comment, Mrs Gore denied allegations that her surgery facilitated abortion for Gonza.

This is despite a warned and cautioned statement to the police admitting the case.

Yesterday, Mrs Gore said Gonza visited the clinic as an ordinary patient.

“When she (Gonza) visited the clinic, she was bleeding and she only came as a patient who needed assistance. We were making follow-up calls on her to hear if our patient was okay,” said Mrs Gore.

Gonza declined to comment, saying the matter was before the courts.
