Mt Darwin residents resort to dam water

By Simbarashe Sithole

Mt DARWIN residents have reportedly gone for more than two months without tap water due to power cuts currently wreaking havoc in the country.

The residents have resorted to fetching water from Pfura Dam.

Mount Darwin district administrator William Mabhuro confirmed that power cuts had seriously hampered water delivery to the area.

“Yes, people are now fetching water for washing and toilet use from the dam due to unavailability of electricity,” he said.

“Those in high level areas are in serious trouble as the little electricity available cannot pump water for them, but fortunately, we have boreholes in place where our people fetch drinking water from.”

A resident, Precious Chitofu, said the situation was not pleasing, but they were slowly getting used to it.

“I stay at Mt Darwin centre, but we have not been receiving tap water for the past two months due to power cuts. There is nothing we can do other than go to the dam to get water,” she said.

Another resident, Givemore Zhoya, said they feared an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

“We fear contracting diseases like cholera and typhoid, among other waterborne diseases,” he said.

Mt Darwin last year recorded 191 cases of cholera at Mukaradzi Mine.
