Mugabe: We don’t have money to pay Zimbabwe government workers but there will be no layoffs and everyone will get a bonus in December

Zimbabwe’s government rejected recently announced plans for large-scale layoffs and bonus cuts for the country’s bloated civil service sector, Information Minister Christopher Mushohwe said, Reuters reported Sept. 14. Last week Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa announced plans to cut civil service jobs by roughly 10 percent, part of an effort to counter the country’s growing economic woes. The move was also Chinamasa’s second attempt to target costly bonuses as a way to alleviate budgetary pressure. His first attempt, in April 2015, was likewise rejected. Deep cuts to the public sector would have further eroded confidence in the government of longtime President Robert Mugabe. Still, it remains to be seen how the government will continue to cover public workers’ wages, which account for a staggeringly large portion of the country’s budget
