Ncube breaks records at Kamandama golf tourney

HWANGE professional golfer, Joseph Ncube emerged victorious at the 2018 Kamandama Golf Tournament with a record breaking margin of 44 points.

The golf sensation relegated another Hwange-based lady golfer, Shelly Gwanonga to second position with the same points, but she lost on count-back points.

Ncube was elated in the finest moment of his career.

“I feel great for winning this tournament. It was a great day for me on the course, everything fell into place, but participating in the Kamandama event is always a big memory for me in remembering the disaster ” Ncube said. “All I can say is let’s keep safe at all workplaces, it doesn’t only happen in mines.”

For his efforts, Ncube walked away with a double-door fridge, while the runner-up, Gwanonga grabbed a four-plate stove.

The event saw 80 blankets, 168 cooking pots, grocery hampers and plates being handed over to the widows of the victims of the mine disaster.

A total of 80 golf professionals participated at the event.

The organisers reached their target of $20 000 and next year they are targeting to raise $40 000. To achieve that feat, they are expecting to invite golfers from Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania to add onto the ones from Zambia, whom they had invited this year.

Every year, ever since the Kamandama mine disaster that occurred on the June 6, 1972, Hwange Colliery Company has held the memorial in honour of workers, who lost their lives and support the widows.
