Nyasango On Track

NATIONAL Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president Tendai Tagara says the recent performance by seasoned long-distance runner Cuthbert Nyasango at the Boston Marathon in the United States is a good sign ahead of the IAAF World Championships in August.
Nyasango made the cut for the championships scheduled for August 4 to 13 in London last year and is expected to be one of the three athletes to take part in the men’s marathon.
The 34-year-old came 14th in 2 hours 17 minutes 40 seconds in the Boston marathon.
Last year he finished on position 11 in 2hours 22 minutes 2 seconds in the same race but this year he improved his time.
Tagara said such performance gives them hope as they look forward to the global competition in August.
“To me there are two things on Boston Marathon. It’s an elite marathon where refined top athletes run. To be in the top 20 that’s great performance by Cuthbert Nyasango. Boston is one of the top races in the world.
“Already Cuthbert has qualified for the World Championships. He qualified at the Olympics last year and he had another race in December and now the Boston Marathon. His times have been consistence.
“So it’s a good indication of his preparations for the World Championships. He is trying to attempt his best time in London. He wants to bring back the 2012 memories,” said Tagara.
In 2012 he surprised many by finishing seventh in 2 hours 12 minutes 8 seconds at the Olympic Games.
Nyasango has been to the World Championships twice, in 2011 and 2015, managing position 16 and 23 respectively
