Peter Matkovich Zimbabwe Golf course designer and golfer

Peter Matkovich ( Shabani ) is a Zimbabwean golfer and course architect .

Positions

Matkovich grew up in Shabani, near the Fort Victoria in Southern Rhodesia , which became independent as Zimbabwe in 1980. His first encounter with an 18-hole golf course was in Shabani Golf Club. Soon he started training with the golf club and was a competitive amateur golf. In 1968 he became a professional golfer and played three years in Europe . He then played a year in Australia and did more than 10 years with the Sunshine Tour .

In 1973 Matkovich decided to move with his family to South Africa. Shortly after he waved above the Umhlali Country Club , which was then a 9-hole golf course. He decided to extend the course to 18 holes. The new golf course was officially opened in 1975 and thus he accomplished his first job as a golf course architect. His next big project was in Worcester , Western Cape , and built a new golf course at a local golf club.

In the early 1990 he worked with his good friend, Dale Hayes , as the “Matkovich & Hayes”. Matkovich excelled as a golf designer and Hayes excelled as a businessman. Their first project was in 1994, at the San Lameer Country Club in Southbroom . Initially it was a golf resort and Matkovich made an 18 hole course with a par of 72.  In the following decades Matkovich designed more than twenty golf courses.
