Robert Mugabe to honor wife by renaming Harare International Airport to Dr. Grace Mugabe International Airport
In a shock reports circling around Harare, Robert Mugabe has decided to honor his wife Grace by naming the Harare International Airport after her.
Harare International Airport is an international airport in Harare, Zimbabwe. It is the largest airport in the country and serves as the base of Air Zimbabwe. The airport is operated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe.
Speaking to one senior Vice President at the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe who shared the details on condition of anonymity, we learn that this new name change for the airport will be implemented in the new year 2017.
The naming of the airport to Dr. Grace Mugabe International Airport will cement Robert Mugabe family’s legacy in Zimbabwe. To compliment the new name change, a sculptor has been hired in Malaysia to create a 10 meter statue of the first lady of Zimbabwe, Dr. Grace Mugabe and this will be erected at the front of the airport.
One vendor, Kindness Manyumwa fumed on hearing about Mugabe’s plans to rename the Harare airport to Dr. Grace Mugabe International airport “This has never happened anywhere in the world. What message is Mugabe trying to send to Zimbabwe citizens. How can Mugabe take us for a ride like this?”
One senior government official confirmed that plans were far ahead with changing the name of the airport.
Sources have confirmed that Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe has agreed to change Harare International Airport name to Dr. Grace Mugabe International Airport during what they are calling a process of re-branding.
One source said, “Making this name change will make Zimbabwe and our airport more marketable to larger airlines as everyone all over the world knows Dr. Grace Mugabe. She is an icon, just like Michelle Obama”.
The airport authorities hopes this name change will help them attract more airlines to fly to Zimbabwe. They are also giving the airports website a fresh new look making it more mobile friendly and include new designs that incorporate Dr. Grace Mugabe’s ethos of hard work and humility.
Meanwhile, the ZANU PF ruling party youth have pledged their support for the new name change and have confirmed that plans are far ahead to host a party to celebrate the new name. “This is a new day for Zimbabwe. Our women continue to break the glass ceiling. Today, one of the most educated women in the history of Zimbabwe, Dr. Grace Mugabe, will have her name on one of the biggest airports in Africa. Because she is so famous all over the world, the new Dr. Grace Mugabe International airport will attract more airlines and tourists to our country”.
Opposition leaders have registered their discontent on the plans to rename the Harare airport in honor of Mugabe’s wife. One opposition activist said that his party will fight this name change in court.

Chikore, who is married to President Robert Mugabe’s only daughter, Bona, has no known management track record and his recent appointment could only worsen the situation at the struggling parastatal.
