Rotary Club Elects New Leader

Lawyer, Mr Nobert Phiri, has been elected president of the Rotary Club of Harare.

In his acceptance speech during an induction workshop held over the weekend, Mr Phiri implored members to utilise their diversity to tackle challenges.

“Through fellowship we build long life relationships that promote greater global understanding.

“Our diversity enables us to connect different perspectives and approach problems form many angles,” said Mr Phiri, a partner with Muvingi and Mugadza Legal Practitioners.

He said the club would focus on mental health and explore ways of assisting patients.

“As Rotarians we are leaders who act responsibly and take action to tackle some of the community’s most pressing challenges,” he said.

Mr Phiri has been a member of the Rotary Club since his days at the University of Zimbabwe.

The Rotary theme for this year is: “Be the Inspiration.”

Nyaradzo Life Assurance Company chairperson Dr Ben Chiganze, who was guest of honour, said there was need for strong collaboration between Rotary Clubs and the community in which they operate in for them to effectively make an impact in transforming lives.

Dr Chiganze said what made a person to be worthwhile was respect for his environment, the community one works with, including the Government of the day.

“What makes a person to be valuable is his or her environment, the way he or she treats that environment, respect for the Government and respect for the beliefs of that environment.

“This organisation will not transform itself if we do not believe in ourselves.

“We have come up with a concept called uhumwe, togetherness.

“We need to work together and always focus on the bigger picture,” said Dr Chiganze, who is also a business executive.

He said people should strive to empower their communities.

“If you are rich, but with poor relatives you should know that you are equally poor.

“Every time you will be struggling to lock the door so that people do not come to you with problems,” he said.

He encouraged the Rotary family to understand community problems and work with the community in any of the projects that they undertake.
