SAFA Set To Announce Mashaba’s Successor

SAFA are set to announce the new Bafana Bafana coach after the upcoming friendlies against Guinea-Bissau and Angola.

Bafana are in camp as stand-in coach Owen da Gama prepares the team to host Guinea-Bissau at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, before they take on Angola at Buffalo City Park next Tuesday.

Da Gama was handed the reins following the sacking of Shakes Mashaba three months ago and the failure to secure a permanent replacement prior to this month’s fixtures.

SAFA’s head of communications Dominic Chimhavi says a deal has been finalised with the new coach but an announcement will only be made next week, so as to not overshadow the current national team activities.

“We were supposed to announce the coach this week but we have decided to postpone it until next week, after the Angola game, so that it does not overshadow the upcoming games,” Chimhavi tells this website.

“Everything is finalised and we’ve already sealed the deal [with the coach]. We are just waiting to announce his name.”

With the emergence of the sanction against Ghanaian referee Joseph Lamptey, who was handed a life-time ban by FIFA on Monday for ‘match manipulation’ during the 2018 World Cup qualifier between Bafana and Senegal in November last year, questions have been raised with regards to possible match-fixing.

In the statement released on Monday, the world football governing body added that ‘further information concerning the South Africa v. Senegal match in question will be provided once the decision becomes final and binding’.

Chimhavi, though, has denied any wrongdoing from SAFA’s end and insists that the 2-1 result in favour of Bafana needs to be upheld.

“We insist it was not our match. The match officials were arranged by FIFA and we had no influence on the outcome thereof,” he says. “We were also on the receiving end of some bad decisions in Burkina Faso and that result stood, so our result must stay.”
