Sundowns clinch title

JOHANNESBURG. — The penultimate round of the 2017-18 Absa South African Premiership soccer season saw Mamelodi Sundowns secure the title with a 3-1 home win over Ajax Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, while Orlando Pirates’ championship challenge ended in a whimper as they went down 1-0 away to Cape Town City.

The Brazilians found themselves in early trouble when Mosa Lebusa put the Urban Warriors ahead, but Pitso Mosimane’s men stormed back through Khama Billiat, Ricardo Nascimento and Sibusiso Vilakazi to claim victory and secure their eighth title in the PSL era (1996/97 onwards).

The result was great news for ‘Downs, but bad news for Ajax in their fight to avoid the relegation playoffs, as there are now only three teams they have a chance of overhauling in the final round: SuperSport United and Polokwane City (who drew away to Chippa United and Free State Stars respectively) are two points clear.
