Tanzania President fires hospital chief after finding patients sleeping on the floor in surprise visit to state hospital
TANZANIA’S new president John Pombe Magufuli is breathing fire.
Barely a week after being sworn in as the nation’s fifth president, the 56-year-old has wasted no time in dealing with errant public officials.
Just a day after his swearing in, Magufuli made a surprise visit to the Finance Ministry on Friday and was shocked to notice that most workers had not reported to work.
On Monday, Magufuli cracked the whip when he sacked the head of the main state hospital after finding patients sleeping on the floor during a surprise visit to the facility.
According to an official at the Tanzanian president’s office, Magufuli also broke up the governing board at Muhimbili National Hospital after discovering the main scanning and diagnostic machines were not working and seeing other poor conditions.
“The president is trying to send a message that times have changed … It’s not business as usual … It’s all about delivery – the government has to deliver for the people,” the Chief Secretary at the president’s office, Ombeni Sefue, said.
Sefue also added that Magufuli has planned other visits to government institutions.
Magufuli’s recent actions has without doubt kept government officials on their toes and it is not shocking why his supportes call him “the bulldozer”.
