Tension in Zim’s Masvingo as Mnangagwa, Chamisa set to address rallies on same day

Tension has reportedly gripped Zimbabwe’s Masvingo province, where President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa are set to address their supporters at least 40km apart on Friday.

According to the privately-owned New Zimbabwe.com, Mnangagwa will be addressing his supporters at Mucheke stadium after touring the now defunct Shabanie Mashava Mines and Cold Storage Company.

The report says that the ruling Zanu-PF Provincial Co-ordinating Committee (PCC) has set in motion plans to bus in at least 60 000 supporters from across the province in order to boost numbers on the day of the rally.

On the other hand, the MDC Alliance is also set to be touring the province from Thursday until Saturday.

Chamisa is expected to address at least 4 rallies in Chivi, Masvingo central, and Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts beginning on Thursday.

Small crowd

Leaders of both Zanu-PF party and the MDC Alliance leaders in the province are said to be working tireless to drum up their support ahead of the rallies.

This comes just days after thousands of demonstrators from the MDC Alliance flocked the city centre in Harare on Tuesday, as the opposition parties called for electoral reforms.

The MDC Alliance is a seven-party opposition coalition led by Chamisa.

The marchers handed over petitions at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

In what appeared to be a number game in the country ahead of the plebiscite, a small crowd of supporters of the ruling Zanu-PF party also marched for peace in the capital, a day after the opposition’s demonstration.
