Villager to do community service for abortion

By Simbarashe Sithole

A-20-YEAR-OLD Mudzi woman was yesterday slapped with an 11-month jail term by a local magistrate for terminating her pregnancy after being dumped by her boyfriend.

Charity Kambuzuma (20) of Tsonga village under Chief Goronga was jailed by magistrate Batanai Madzingira.

Prosecutor Nathan Majuru told the court that on May 22, police officers received an anonymous call to the effect that Kambuzuma had terminated her pregnancy.

Kambuzuma was questioned, but denied having terminated her pregnancy. The police took her to Kotwa General Hospital for examination and the results were positive.

In mitigation, Kambuzuma pleaded for a non-custodial sentence, saying she had no option after she was dumped by her boyfriend.

“Your worship, may you spare me a jail term, I was dumped by my boyfriend after I told him of his pregnancy. He threatened to kill me so I decided to terminate it,” she pleaded.

The magistrate suspended three months on condition of good behaviour while eight months were commuted to 280 hours of community service at Nyamapanda Primary School.
