Woman Arrested With 3kgs Cocaine At Airport

Harare — A Harare woman has appeared in court after she was arrested with 3kgs of cocaine at Harare International airport, having flown in from Brazil.

Beauty Mutashu, 32, was refused bail when she appeared before magistrate Babra Chimboza.

Mutashu told court that she was a sex worker adding that if remanded in custody her children would have no choice but to join the trade as she was the sole breadwinner.

Court ruled she was a flight risk after she different addresses when asked where she lived.

The investigating officer in the case said the suspect provided two different addresses and, upon verification, police established that the places were lodges.

In court Mukusha gave a Waterfalls address, explaining that she frequents the lodges for prostitution.

“That’s where I stayed for a long time and would meet my clients there. I survive through prostitution so if you send me to jail my children will also become prostitutes,” she said.

She told the court that she did not know that she had the drug in her language.

“I didn’t know the shirts contained drugs. I was only given brand new shirts and was told not to open them,” she told court.

However, court ruled that there was overwhelming evidence against her.

It is state’s case that detectives from CID drugs received a tip that Mukusha was flying from Brazil aboard United Arab Emirates EK 713 and carrying dangerous drugs.

She then arrived at Harare International airport and proceeded to the clearance hall where she was directed to detectives for monitoring.

The cops searched two bags in her presence. Court heard there were 11 new shirts in her bags and each shirt contained a rectangle aluminium foil containing cocaine.

The cocaine weighed 3,8kgs and is valued at $304,000.
