State owned Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Marange Development Trust (MDT) paving way for the development of several projects in the community where the precious gems are extracted.
The signing of the MOU will result in the government owned mining firm widening its projects within the Marange area, said ZCDC board member and chairman for the corporate, social responsibility and human resources committee Colonel Esau Mudiwa.
“We are resolute that we can still forge ahead and do our best to unlock value in the growth of this economy by ploughing back profits to the marginalised,” he said.
MDT chairman Mr Malvern Mudiwa said the MOU will facilitate closer relationship between the diamond mining firm and the Chiadzwa community.
“What we need is to see the ZCDC doing its best to unlock value by creating jobs, increasing development and focusing on the beneficiaries which are the community,” said Mr Mudiwa.
ZCDC chief executive officer Dr Moris Mpofu said while the agreement is not replacing the government’s community share ownership trust’s focusing on the welfare of the Marange community is an indication of the company’s policy to retain part of its earnings to the people.
“We will do our best to honour what is in this document and are pledging the best in terms of enhancing the welfare of the people in the Marange area,” he said.
Mining companies are being entailed by the government to also focus on the development of projects in the areas they operate.
