Minister of Sport and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwane on Sunday challenged the Zimbabwe basketball team to give their all and qualify for the 2017 Afro-basketball finals by overcoming South Africa in two play-off encounters.
The Zimbabwe basketball team will face off with South Africa in two crucial play-off matches for a ticket to the Afro-basket finals to be hosted by Congo Brazzaville.
The team was on Sunday given a send off in the capital where Honourable Hlongwane urged the team to raise the country’s flag and qualify for Africa’s basketball extravaganza.
Minister Hlongwane also urged the team to guard against complacency and forget about past victories over South Africa.
Basketball Union of Zimbabwe president Addison Chiware thanked government for its role in funding a week long camp as well as covering expenses for the trip to South Africa.
The Zimbabwe basketball team was scheduled to leave for South Africa at 5pm Zimbabwean time.
Zimbabwe will face South Africa on Friday and Saturday with the triumphant team progressing to the Afro-basket finals.
The winner between Zimbabwe and South Africa will join Angola, Cameroon, hosts Republic Congo Brazaville, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, reigning champions Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia and Uganda.
