The main new headline in Zimbabwe’s media on Sunday was a call by First Lady Grace Mugabe for the beheading of sexual offenders as the southern African country battles to contain a rising rape scourge. The state-run Sunday Mail and private weekly The Standard both carried stories on Mugabe’s address during a ceremony to mark World Blood Donor Day on Saturday.
She told invited guests that rapists and other sexual offenders do not deserve to live.
“I personally think that those who commit heinous crimes like rape should be immediately sent to the gallows where they should be beheaded because I don’t they deserve to live,” she said.
“I see no reason to think twice about this. That person is not fit to be part of a society.”
Zimbabwe has witnessed a surge in rape cases, some of which involve the abuse of children as young as six months.
