Zimbabwe’s Mugabe Slams Members of Ruling Party for Infighting

By Chengetai Zvauya and Godfrey Marawanyika

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe criticized members of his ruling party for factional infighting, saying displays of “unbridled ambition” go against the organization’s principles.

Divisions within the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front are pitting the party’s old guard, led by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, against the so-called Generation-40 group that coalesced around Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe. Both factions deny the dispute, even as it’s reported by state-controlled media.

Addressing reporters in the capital, Harare, on Wednesday, Mugabe slammed what he described as “unbridled ambition which seeks to ride roughshod over others” and goes against the ZANU-PF’s ethos of “never bickering over party positions.”

The 92-year-old leader also accused Western “detractors” of sowing division in the southern African nation and organizing a recent series of anti-government protests in the capital and other major cities.
