2014 can easily be described as one of the dry years of Zimbabwean music as there were few success stories to talk about.
Below are the five top musicians of the year.
1. Tocky Vibes
We have to give it to him, the young man emerged to rock the country with his uniquely different lyrics. Despite his controversial show antics at the hyped Harare International Conference Centre 2014 shutdown show last month, Tocky remains 2014’s most popular musician. He deserves the top post! Aenda nenyika!
The Afro-fusion group has continued to carry the flag of Zimbabwe abroad with their quality music and performances. They deserve the top honour.
3. Jah Prayzah.
The musician kept his head above the water with the well attended live shows. Although his last album, Kumbumura Mhute, was critiqued as poorly baked and not different from his previous releases, it partially dominated the market as there were no major new album releases in the year.
4. Leonard Zhakata
After hibernating for some time Baba Chamu regained his fame in 2013 and carried over, dominating the Radio Zimbabwe charts for most of 2014. Three of his songs also dominated the radio station’s year-end top 50 charts.
5. Soul Jah Love
The musician maintained his form from 2013, with his songs Ndini Uya uya, Handichabatika, Usadheerera ngoma among many others becoming ‘anthems’. Although controversy was following him everywhere, the musician remained popular with both the youths and the older generations. The chanter was to cap the year with an ZIMA musician of the year accolade.
