ZPC power to the top

ZPC Kariba . . . .  . . . . . . . . . .  (1) 2
Tsholotsho . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (0) 0

ROOKIE Samuel Makawa scored his maiden goal before Raphael Manuvire added a second late on as ZPC Kariba shot to the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League with a win at Nyamhunga yesterday. The result took ZPC Kariba’s points tally to 15, one more than second-placed How Mine.

Makawa found the target on 34 minutes while Manuvire made sure of the points with just eight minutes remaining to give coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa every reason to smile. “It’s early days yet but there is no bad win,” said the veteran coach. “It was a very difficult match.

Tsholotsho were solid at the back and we really struggled to penetrate them. We had to be patient with our play and in the end we got goals late in both halves. “We might have won today but there is still a lot of work to do and we will be going back to the training ground to work on areas that need sorting out.”

Makawa spent last season at Division One side Kariba Waves and yesterday he showed signs of maturity as he played a blinder for the home side.

He showed great composure as he opened the scoring, neatly controlling a Manuvire pass before slotting the ball past a badly exposed Chang Mariyoni in goal for the visitors.

Manuvire hit the upright on 71 minutes but got it right 11 minutes later.

Tsholotsho coach Farai Tawachera reckoned that his team, which is winless after eight matches, was let down by poor finishing.“We are doing everything well but scoring and when you don’t score you don’t win matches,” he said. “In this game we matched ZPC Kariba in most departments but we lost concentration twice and got punished.

“We are yet to win this season and certainly we are under pressure to get that win. It’s important to taste our first set of three points because going on such a run without winning really affects our confidence.”
